Gettin back to {VEGEtable roots}

12 May

Adding to the uniqueness of my life, my parents (primarily my moms) decided to raise me as a vegetarian, with the exception of scale fish. This continued until i was 12 and i decided to starting eating chicken like my pops. Yea, my parents were very empowering so the agency i have over my own life and my situations stems from my parents. Anyways, during the time that i was a veggie, i ate a whole lot of falafel. ALOT. at least once a week. In SF, we have some pretty good ones, try 19th n Irving if ur lookin, but out here they also dominate this vegetarian delicacy. With that being said, i am not attempting to say that french people understand vegetarians, just the other day i was at an African restaurant and they served my vegetarian friend a sauce that was made with porc but scooped the pork out. Sometimes they will not serve you cheese, sometimes that means you eat fish, or even lamb or even chicken. Crazy cultural misunderstanding. Anyways, Rue de Rosiers…. bomb falafels. I would recommend L’AS de falafel. fresh pita. shredded red and white cabbage. tomatoes. cucumbers. falafel balls. deep fried eggplant. hummus. tahini sauce. and if ur tryin to spice it up (you kno i like that spice) get the Lenny Kravitz special wit the Harissa. they double layer the aforementioned combo. Real good stuff. Its kinda crazy because in my carnivorous days i forgot the appeal of meatless meal. a light full, great for pre exercise. If u come to paris, u really should go get one… its that serious, call it the cancer special.

This is not AS but its Chez mariane… good but not the joog shop like the lenny kravitz spot

After we stopped for a nice traditional french macaroon, with fresh raspberries, much better than that coconut bull….

Catchin the sunny daze, running around this city, i stumbled upon maybe my favorite store ever. OK, i lied, it was not an accident when i rolled up to Colette. I knew about it. Had known for a good while. But i didnt really know how it was on the inside. Needless to say, i was not disappointed. As you walk in, past the rotating window displays, you fall upon tables worth of books. Great books. Sneaker Freaker, look books, photo books of different fashions and styles. Punk, Skate, Hip-Hop, Classic, High-End (foreshadowing of GL4M). Then there is the electronics case. They had a 1600 euro phone in there. I was like damn, that shits on the macbook AIR and the Iphone. Well not the 12000 diamond plated iphone, but on the regular one ya. I skipped over the various hair products and perfumes and dazzled my female friends who were accompanying me. Nice jewlery, glasses everything. Then the upstairs. Crazy. Upstairs was an rather good representation of the fashion fusion that i appreciate. On one side there were the High-End clothes. 3gs for a burberry dress and prada bags that were softer than a baby’s bottom. The mens dress stuff was stunning. Teal shirts with matching sweaters and plaid skinni leg dress pants. My kind of stuff. Then in the back, the gold mine. Brand new spring collection BBC/ICE CREAM, 300 euro all gold Y-3 hi tops, and a myriad of nice nikes and addis in btw. They sandwiched all this goodness in the bread of an art exhibit on top and a restaurant on bottom. This, though being pretty pricey, was like a Giant Disneyland. They even had setups to play the new GTA4 on PS3 and 360. Good shit to say the least.

After leaving Colette i wandered down st Honoré and stumbled into STARcow and Carhartt. They came hard with some nice sbs, the new ones and some surprising old ones. Two real nice stores. StarCow did have a nice shoe display suspended from the ceiling that i might steal for a house of mine one day.

I then hit up KilaWATCH, the vintage store. No Doubt, great selection of stuff, they def cut down the clutter of a GoodWill or Salvation by only having the stuff you would want, but they want you to pay for it. Vintage clothes at Dept STore prices, i dunno abt that. I, personally, would rather have to spend several hrs weeding through somebodys trash to find what i like for 5$. They did have a super glasses collection and some real nice books. I looked at a book called “Back in the Day”. It was a photobook of ppl back in the 80s, straight cazals and fat laced clydes. the style back then killt a 7x white t and some girbauds. Sorry dude. Im an 80s baby, so maybe ill just have to bring that all back. INtheEND, Good Day, Good Friends, Good Sneaks…. la vie est belle.

Almost Cinco

In anticipation of cinco de mayo…. recipes for beans from last week. Since the best i can do is red beans, havent seen or eaten one black one since i been here, i ran with that. Red beans… in a cast iron pot, though clay is preferable because it lends to a better flavor. Throw the beans in the pot, then cover them with water. More water the better cause not only will you end up with a nice lil bean soupy mixture that is great for dipping tortillas in, but if u let the water get lower then the beans you will burn then. I did that the first time and it didnt taste too good. Beans in the pot, water in the pot, half an onion in the pot and a couple cloves of garlic. Salt salt salt. Then let it boil/simmer for as many hrs as it takes until the beans are soft. Always make sure the beans are covered with water. I made some of the famous fajitas to go with the beans. Delicioso. et Bon Apetit.

Throw some salsa and its the dannon… almost like home… almost

Whether the Weather will B better…

4 May

I make many mistakes in life, just as many as, but not more than, the next man, i hope. One of these was thinking that the BayArea was home to the most indecisive weather patterns in the world. wrong. Wrong. WRONG. Its Paris, France. In the bay, we catch a lil hot and a lil cold on the same day. Peculiar yes, but nothing like the weather i am subject to out here. One day, about two weeks ago, so mid April, i caught warm and sunny in the morning, two hours later it got cold, then snow. I mean come on. It didnt snow the whole time i had been here until April. And to make matters worse, i have friends back home, even friends in Mass, posting fb albums with them tanning in the park. Shoot me. Weds i wake up to hail hitting my window and thunder and lightings. That was at 2. By 7 it was too hot to wear a jacket out at night. Terrible. Anyways, this weekend, we caught some good sun. Since good sun = good spirits i went down to the Jardin de Tuilleries with a couple friends from outta town. Real nice, next to the louvre. Sunny day, sunny park, sunny smiles on sunny girls… Great… also like california…. PSYCH ha that would b impossible…

Real nice Spider… and BIGtoo
