Choosing

30 Sep

At the end of the day, life is about choices, so much so, life can be said to be an assembly of the left-right path choices that one makes over the course of time. As far as my choices go, I like the path less traveled, Combating the Mundane (the tagline of the company I work for Parallel MVMT), so to speak. They say bravery is the actions that you continue with when your filled with fear. Me, I say, take the LEAP. Fuck it. See where you land.

Choosing on the other hand, is what my sahas call it when a male or female is attempting to pull someone else. That is to say, U get at a chick in the club, CHOOSING. A chick flirts with u, CHOOSING. You call a chick hella times, CHOOSING. Great vocab word.

Choices on the other hand, is a cafe in Brooklyn. I stumbled upon this lil gem(hahaha) as I was setting up an exhibit for Terence Nance at Corridor Gallery. As it turns out, Corridor is a gallery made out of part of Danny Simmons’ house. I previously had no idea. But yea, so I order a salmon burger, a shifty choice, but it seemed like a good one. And then. All of a sudden. Out of no where. A choice. The folks at choice thought, in lieu of my beloved lettuce, I would want an assembly of sprouts on my sandwich. Good idea. But, in execution, they put a heap of cilantro on my bun. If you know me at all, you know that me n cilantro have had beef since an incident in ’01, to the point where I loathe cilantro. So it took me ten mins to pic the cilantro off my burger b4 i could even take the interesting mix of salmon, sprout, tomato and picked ginger. Def an out there burger but still pretty good. I just thought they should tell you if ur gonna b attacked by cilantro so u can CHOOSE not to put it on ur shit. Combating the Mundane is good, not as a long as cilantro is not involved.

Reppin out in NYC… lets make it happen

Take Ya Top OFF

24 Sep

To quote the Cool Kids “party in the
Penthouse. But we ain’t got no penthouse! We party on the rooftop”. Ironic for a group from the chi that rocks an NYC classic flavor to speak about rooftop parties. Since I have been in the big manazana I have been privy to an unusal number of these top gone gatherings, enough for me to conclude that this is a staple of the city. Interestingly enough, a rooftop party might be the perfect place for me. It’s one step up from a top floor apt wit a balcony and it allows for the perks of being out at night within the safety of a rather controlled environment (some roo-ve-z being more controlled than others). In conclusion, I like it so “don’t say the [party] is topless, say the tories are out,” or say your in NYC.

Fashion as a DEfinition of self.

Many people hit the streets, the office, the world with how they look at the forefront of their psyches. They wake up, look in the mirror and think, damn what can I change about who looks back? The answer they find is usually their clothes.

What makes clothes so important? I have spent many a sleepless night pondering the natural urge that I have that fashion and clothes are important to me. First, I realize that my clothes are truly a means of defining who I am. When people see how I dress, they assume things about me, about how much money I have, many of which are not necessarily true. They give a cloak, behind which I can hind my personal life, the struggles I have, the things I hold dear. The second truth about clothes did not hit me until I read an essay by Frantz Fanon.

The essay was called “Algeria Unveiled” and was about the European fascination with unveiling the Algeria women. Though it was a very interesting piece, most of what was said was not directly related to my love for the fashionable. But, he started off his writing by positing that clothes are what lets you know you are in a foreign land, away from home, in a different culture.

“The way people clothe themselves, together with the traditions of dress and finery that custom implies, constitutes the most distinctive form of a society’s uniqueness, that is to say the one that is the most immediately perceptible. Within the general patter of a given costume, there are of course always modifications of detail, innovations which in highly developed societies are the mark of fashion. But the effect as a whole remains homogeneous, and great areas of civilization, immense cultural regions, can be grouped together on the basis of original, specific techniques of men’s and women’s dress.”

This is where I had the lightbulb moment, if clothes most readily define cultures, then can they not define subcultures as well, and if they define subcultures, then that must be why we dress the way we do. This situation rings home so readily with me because of my sneakerhead affiliation. When one sneakerhead encounters another on the street, there is always a short battle for respect between the two. You look at dude’s kicks, judge them, compare them to ur own, and then feel happy or sad whether you deem yours better or not. Inherent in this situation is the knowledge that the other person is thinking the same thing, the other person, therefore, thinks like you, the other person is part of the sneakerhead subculture.

This theory works across the board, even for the “practical dressers”. When you see the guy in zip-off capris, a hoodie and tevas with socks, you know hes going for comfort. But you know this because his attire indicates that he is a part of that subculture, the pratical or comfort dressers.

The C+ manifesto states that:

America is a consumer society. Today, more than ever, we conspicuously consume to define our identities, to belong to a sense of community. In the United States, fashion becomes an exercise in desire, adorning our bodies with objects to create a more attractive image. Only in such a consumer society does your clothing serve as an extension of identity, as such a focal point of conversation, where your surface image can signify your sensibilities, opinions, and personality traits.

This statement highlights even more so the importance of clothes within American society in particular. We need to define ourselves, to be unique, to be someone, to find comfort in those around you. So next time you see someone with the same shoes on as you, find out y they chose those. If it was a conscious decision, they prolly have more in common with you then you think…. THINK…

seePLUS…

16 Sep

SeeingPlus is the mantra of the C+ brand. The goal is to {re]frame the visual dialogue. As I was reading this article by Adam Kayce, I couldn’t help but think that he was right. In the article, he talks about rethinking the way we consider failure. When you fail, make a mistake, feel uneasy, the visceral reaction is to look inward. You ask yourself what you did wrong or think over your actions to see where you might have made a mistake or taken a wrong turn. Kayce posits that this necessarily the right place to look. He states that this might simply be an indication that you do not feel as fulfilled as possible and that maybe the answer is to find something else to do in addition to what you might already be doing right. Its a crazy notion that I had never really thought about. My reaction to every time i have failed has been to beat myself and stripsearch my brain in order to find out where i went wrong when the answer might be as simple as I was not satisfied with whatever, related to the task or not, and that messed up my feng shui. A great example of seeing plus, there is more there then a reaction or a supposed instinct because are instincts not learned reactions that we learned so far back that we dont question them anymore?????? You tell me

Part Deux. After Wes n I kilt the networking game and figured out that we had met before (shout out the hogs) it was tyme for the shows to begin. First up was Christian rich. To start, I had no idea who they were. They tried with moderate success to emulate the sound of the cool kids (with a beeper record of their own) and the style of kanye. Unfortunately, the most marking thing about their performance was that their mics were up entirely too loud and thusly made a terrible noise that bothered the 15 someodd people that were there everytime they spoke. At a rap concert, this is a terrible look.

After a brief Dj interlude, the headliners, Pacific Division, stepped up to the stage. They were new to mr but apparently that’s something to be kept under wraps because they should be known. When i saw they should be know, i mean that the greater HipHop community knew who they were. The likes if Mickey Facts, Asher Roth, Amanda Diva and even Q-Tip showed up to support the young cats. As far as the sound is concerned,They are a group from la with a unique combo of cool and fresh in their swagger, which made for some real good music. On top of that they mentioned scrapers which always will bring the bay outta me. That and any Too Short. It was nice to see Cali getting some more love as Pac Div announced that they had just signed with universal. Congrats again n don’t get caught in the hypebeast.

There go TIP… excuse the funky photos… i need to cop a new CAMMY, my samsung broke asap…. tisk tisk tisk…. in the end I say 5$ well spent

ROCKing out with my BELLS out

2 Sep

I know, I know, I’m pretty late by now (like 2 weeks) but i figured i would throw up some info on ROCK the bells. The list of acts was ridic, almost rivaling the heat. Most artists came through and kilt it, which is a feat because the Shoreline Amphitheater is a tough venue to get moving since is so big, outside, and has so much dead airspace. The show really made me appreciate the intimacy of a small venue, even more so than I already had.

Despite the largeness of the event, there was some satiation for the small time lovers, the side stage. Apart from the grand main event area, next to the 12$ coronas and the chicken tenders n fries, sat the side stage, dubbed “for the up and comers”. Among these performers were The Pack, DJ Blaqstarr, the Cool Kids and TYflyGUY. The Pack was cool, a standard performance for some cats that are decent at best. I used to feel them tougher before they “blew”, well more like sneezed. Now I was stuck watching Young L (whose beats are still bonanas) AIM on his kick during the performance.

As far as the Cool Kids go, they GO. I feel them tough. The BEATS, all capitals. The SWAGGER, all fresh. The FLOW, all fun. I mean, if i were to be a rapper, I could b a Cool Kid. Not to mention that I live in my liar in the clouds, so its much cooler where I live anyways. Unfortunately, the haphazard scheduling of the event made it so I had no idea when any artist was to hit either stage so I missed my cooler kin altogether. But alas, I had already seen them at Paris Social Club a few months before, so it was not a complete tragedy.

As arguably the most famous of this group, and possibly the youngest, TYGA, aka my little brother Armand, he put it down (extra points for his LV white Damier coin case/belt). I had to give him extra love for the OBAMA, OBAMA remix to a Milli. Yes, we CAN.

Meanwhile, on the grand stage, two of the headliners, Mos and Nas, I had already seen. This put me in a optimal position to compare them on this large stage, with the performances that I had seen on much smaller stages. But there was no comparison. With this being said, I do not intend to berate large venues entirely but they really are more akin to listening to the radio real loud with alot of ppl next to you. The artists put it down, no doubt, MURS for sure impressed, but ill take a >3000 ppl any day.

Bruh, Chuk, n I heald it down on tha hot day…. we on fire

tha Giant on 22′s, PART II

1 Sep

The second half of my birthday fooding occurred at the family oriented, family sized Buca diBeppo. I had been here many times, enjoyed them fully. My favorite dish was the Rigatoni Positano, a delicious mix of al dente rigatoni, grilled eggplant, marinara and chicken. It was a must, every time. But, knowing my luck, I walk in and its of the ****ing menu. To make it worse, they no longer carry the rigatonis or the eggplant, so i was stuck

To be honest, that situation with my favorite dish was an allegory for the rest of the meal. Everything was good, but it was not the Buca of old. I think they have been bitten by the chain bug, run too big as a company. In all, sadly enough, I cannot even say bon apetit, cause I dont suggest u go there, Ill give it one more try before I cancel it out forever… stay posted. :(

All food follies aside, I still had a great time, the dinner was a wonderful prequel to the festivities to come, including the outstanding panoply I put on for the night. I realized a while back that a good time is an intent, a desire, who’s agency is entirely in your (3rd person) hands. If you want to have a good time, you will. And me, all I need is good ppl around me. I was in there with the fam, both blood and not, and I throughly enjoyed myself. Cheers to that…..

Even bruh had a good time, wit the go dumbs. Rep where u from, SCO on mines, onCITAS
