O wow… im hella behind schedule…. a few weeks ago, i attended the vanguard conference out at head royce in the east bay. This conference was created as a forum for black men at independent schools around the bay area. A place for them to bond and share common experience in order to better improve their roles within their communities. As far as students went, their were over 100 students 6-12th grade. The strong showing in the middle school range was so powerful to me because if you are able to touch a kid at that age and have them realize then how much support they really have in this seemingly foreign environment. wow. Any way, if you are not from the bay, the independent schools around here tend to be primarily homogeneous affluent caucasian communities, where diversity is supported by the admission staff, a sentiment which is not always echoed as strongly throughout the rest of the school.
Either way, my role in this conference was to meet with the 25 some odd teachers that were in attendance and help them better themselves through my experience as an independent school alum. Powerful work being done.
But. The biggest BUT. no no no, get ur mind out of the gutter, it was only guys at the conference. yea the big but… toni Morrison. Yea. wow… what a surprise. I actually got to meet her… and there is really nothing else to be said. coolest shit ever.
