Lookin’ Good: the 33

31 Jul

I took the bus for the first time in a min the other day. I realized in taking it that I have been missing out. Ya, its a little uncomfortable, might be smelly or dirty or wtv, but its REAL. its where the ppl are. If you like to ppl what like I do, then the bus is the way to go. Take these foreigners for instance. I saw them walking up to get on the bus and I knew off top: Frenchies. You can just tell by the clothes, the swagger, everything. And Im not hating all. you cant be mad at the leather with the classic chucks. or the pink plaid with the sweater. Pure french…. classy

Bay Cites

25 Jul

I was out here enjoying this so cal weather, headed to Venice beach one time. on the way we stopped at Bay Cites deli for some sandos. i realized walking in that I had seen it on food network best I ever ate. I ordered a large chicken on italian roll with honey mustard the works minus pickles. the bread was super solid, like mikes sour with out the sour. but I mean large nahhhh I could have eaten two at least. all in all it was good but not the best I ever had. wamp

The San Francisco Circus

22 Jul

I dropped by theBKcSF with Cplus the other day and contemplated and discussed changing the world through fashion and how to use fashion to build communities. All very interesting and noble stuff.

Picture 1

But, on a must less noble note, I was chopping it up with Gabe the Great and Calvin about the differences btw the SF store and the Brooklyn one. As we were talking, I realized something that ppl should know. If any of you love yourselves as much as I do… (hehehe) then you should slide through Brooklyn Circus for the mere fact that THEY WILL PUT YOU UP ON THEIR SITE. I mean i dunno its like a little bit of fame. Slide through show love to these coolCATS and they will reciprocate… its amazing how easy building a community is. If you have a community and a movement behind your product and your brand you have gold. If you dont, you dont have shit. you just have a t shirt or wtv… not worth anything…

INTROducing…. J. Elquist

19 Jul

As if he needs my validation, I would like to introduce you to my boy J. Elquist. He has popped up on A.G.G. several times and has been a good friend of mine for some years now. Hes an up n coming fashion designer, forward thinker and the epitome of a Modern Gentleman. He just kicked off his blog the Shades of Great. The branding is impecable: “Society requires a certain shade of grey to go from a good to a great man, and at the heart of that great man – a gentleman.” Gotta love it…. be sure to look out for him in the future. First up, writer for the SF fashion awards…

Lookin’ Good: Public Enemies… in the Wild

18 Jul

Lets start with this movie was bad…. I swear top ten worst movies I have seen. @ no pt did i ever have an emotional response to the movie save being upset that Pretty Boy Floyd ran in a straight line instead before getting shot by Christian Bale. I guess that if I am to imagine how it would be if there was no FBI and no interstate task force then maybe I could see how Dillinger ran into so many traps but I mean shit… thats not how it is now. It just made everything predictable. Even how he died.. there was only one way for it to happen… just unfulfilling.

With that being said, the 1930′s style was killing it. I mean you cant be mad at thin leather straps (aka suspenders) or a dbl breasted 3 piece (dont mmmmmhhh that chicken that not what im talking about).

I mean… Im mad i couldnt find a picture of Kip Raines glasses (see Gone in 60 sec for reference if you dont know) or of the leather strap holdsters for the automatic rifles. super wet

The swagg in this movie echoed my favorite IdleWild. Had to show some love to the way black folks do a similar style…. like clipse said “you have to be born with swagger”

#12. The Brooklyn Circus!
A local Bay Area magazine called “7 x 7″ is hosting a contest of whoever sends in a picture of true and individual style which is right up my alley of interest! Working with Brooklyn Circus, there is no doubt that we behold the most eccentric, eclectic, and inspirational style out of anyone else in this diverse city…Brooklyn Circus Style is identified on the streets not by a car, label, or brand advertisement but by style conflicting character that overpowers the image of a true San Franciscan, empowering us from the rest. The Deadline is Tomorrow, July 15th so give this link a glance or two and it will be evident who deserves the W. The prize is a spread on their September issue, which will end up deserving of a brand on the come up making it known wherever we attempt to establish ourselves so vote accordingly!

ReBlog:BRUTE LABS wins at AIGA Cause/Affect

10 Jul

Im starting a new trend. No it has nothing do to with my impeccable style in this photo. Since everyone is hopping on this retweet business, Im starting a reBlogging campaign. Word 4 word reproduction of another blogs post. let me know what you think

Team-Photo-799800

Last night, Justin To, Andrew Truong, Joshua To, Greg Powel and Andre tha Giant headed to San Francisco for the biennial AIGA Cause/Affect awards. In their words, it “is a competition for do-gooders, who do good work.”

The room was full of like-minded individuals and provided a fantastic opportunity to network, meet people interested in social causes and throw ideas against the wall to see what would stick.

BRUTE LABS entered projectOPEN and Well Done in the Community Development and Health & Welfare categories respectively. The competition was strong and amazing design work for social good was displayed throughout. The AIGA office had the feel of a museum and it was an honor to have some of our work featured next to Office, Nike, Clif Bar, and Academy of Sciences.

What was even more amazing was to hear the MC call out “BRUTE LABS” as the first prize winner in the Community Development category for projectOPEN. The team was ecstatic. As high fives were exchanged, Andre tha Giant did all he could to suppress his desire to get up and dance. When we moved to the Health and Welfare category and again heard “BRUTE LABS” as a second place winner for Well Done, we couldn’t believe it.

As the awards came to a close, everyone Andre met during the first hour before the awards immediately swarmed towards us. We spent much of the rest of the evening meeting new people and talking about ways to collaborate during the rest of the summer and fall months.

Special thanks to the AIGA staff for putting on such a fantastic event. We’ll see you again next time!

tha Giant is the new BRUTE

As I mentioned in BRUTES of the [best]kind I have been interning with BRUTE LABS for the summer. As of today, I have just done my first official work for them, an introductory blog post. Fitting that I post about a post I wrote.

Introduction: Andre tha Giant, the Intern

Hello Brutes.

Take this as my formal introduction to the BRUTE LABS movement. My name is Andre Gray and I am currently an undergraduate at Amherst College. I was born in NYC and raised in the SFC and I am excited to say that I will be the inaugural intern at BRUTE LABS for the summer of 2009. Prior to this summer I spent some time in New York working in brand development and I have been hosting a blog at andreggray.com for almost two years. I see the blog as the outlet for my creative energies and its writing base gives me a chance to hone in on my own voice without having someone else’s expectations in mind. As a creative mind, I think of myself as someone that lives on the edge, always looking to push the boundaries of the norm and the mundane, be the platform writing, clothing or any other form of expression. As a professional, I think of myself as a social entrepreneur where social progression trumps any fiscal advancement. My goal is to propagate the tools to leap tall buildings in singular bounds, to make what seems impossible, possible. This thought runs hand in hand with BRUTE LABS and their desire to get the change they want to see in the world started. To quote Joshua To “What makes BRUTE LABS truly innovative is our process of identifying problems or issues of any size, then focusing on projects that can be developed and launched quickly”, making the macro manageable. I grew up in a bilingual French/English academic environment. The totality of these different environments makes the basis for my global view and my interest in keep everyone conscious of humans and their needs around the world.

I came out of my school year with a yearning, a deficit. I needed an outlet for my creative juices. The way BRUTE LABS came up on my radar was a perfect example of the power of the ’09 internet. I started my ‘summer search’ with the Amherst College alumni network, as Amherst is my alma mater. Email allowed for a simple way to avoid the awkwardness of asking virtual strangers for help. In the long list of Amherst alum, I came across Ben Softness from Google. I figured, I like Google, its in the Bay Area, hey what is the worst that could happen. Ben was kind enough to tweet my request for an internship … And then, I found BRUTE LABS. Boop, the BL blip. From there I got in touch with Joshua and looked over the website. Needless to say, I didn’t need very much convincing.

BRUTE LABS is a perfect marriage between the two sides of myself, between my desire to build communities around the world and my love for creativity. Along the course of my education, as I learn, both through academia and on the street, I have become more readily aware of the opportunites that have been allotted to me. Education shines as the greatest door opened for me. I have become fully aware of how access to elite education has been instrumental to my ability to come into my own and formulate a specific, personal vision of self. When I look over my path, I further realize that this search for self identity is, in itself, a luxury.

* Do child soldiers have the luxury to think about how they want be viewed?
* How can a single mother take time out of her day to think about how the world looks at her if she is busy making sure her kids can eat?
* Does the phrase “self-image” enter the daily life of a homeless man with AIDS?

It is out of these questions that my desire to save the world, or at least the piece I can reach, started. It is the duty of the privledged to help those who do not have the ability, be it in the form of opportunity or resources, to help themselves. If they make an effort, we must reciprocate. With BL, Ihope to to use my creativity to bring new ideas to the NFP sector without having to have the entirety of the execution laying in my hands. I am able to help build communities and further human connectivity. I hope to be able to begin to affect change in the way in which people are viewed and judged. If it is a simple as showing the homeless where they can shower and eat without panhandling or making sure a minority kid has a someone to turn to when he realizes the system is built on his back, or making sure everyone has potable drinking water… every little and big… thing counts. For the summer, I will be interning at BRUTE LABS, hoping to throw as many hours as I can into the MVMT machine. I hope to build a lifelong marriage with BL, which will allow me to continue the WORK no matter where in the world I might find myself, starting with the summer and moving on from there.

When I’m not bruting, you can find me being active, either on the hoop court or exercising and enjoying the outdoors, all with music all around me. We all need to see the humanity in everyone, those who hold the keys and those who hold nothing. Whichever position you find yourself in, priveldged or not, you can still have an effect on the world around you, be it as simple as someone next to you or someone around the world. It is your duty to effect change in your own way. Together we can change the world.
