The story of Laurent and I goes way back to my time in Paris. Laurent was the cat with the accessories, with the plug, with the girls. He was the man. He had the presence when he walked in the room. I was put on with Laurent through my Ace, Mr Int, Tim Kau (like I said, currently making moves out in Beijing).
On his perspective: “Photography is just a hobby. I take photos to immortalize a moment, to remember it forever. I hope to capture an emotion, a look, a sentiment and then transfer these to whoever looks at my photos. If my memory serves, my eye eys see, my heart feels, but photography allows us to relive a memory, making the past infinitely more palpable and attainable. Photos also grant access to a particular universe, that of the photographer, to deliver messages, to share ideas, a vision of reality, the photographer’s reality.
I never considered making photography my profession because I dont feel as if I have anymore talent then the next man. O sincerely hope that everyone can take photos with little technical savvy, because its the feeling of the person, the intuition, the eye of the taker that make the difference. There exists a plethora of amateurs that take beautiful photos on flickr and myspace for example. Photography is much more accessible then cinema, which is much more complex. With this being said, these are two completely different realms though this might explain the contrasting numbers of amateurs in the two art forms.
In the future, if the opportunity arose I might take picture taking more serious, but thats not where its at right now.“
The Man, The Artist
Original Response: “Je n’ai pas d’ambition particulière en photo. C’est juste un hobby. Je prends des photos pour immortaliser un moment et m’en souvenir à jamais. Je veux capter une émotion, un regard, un sentiment et les transmettre à celui ou à celle qui regardera une de mes photos. Ma mémoire se souvient, mes yeux voient, mon coeur ressent, mais la photographie, elle, parvient à nous faire revivre un souvenir (dans ce cas, le passé est d’autant plus palpable et il ne paraît plus si lointain). La photo permet aussi d’entrer dans un univers particulier, celui du photographe, de délivrer des messages, de partager des idées, une vision de la réalité, sa réalité…
Je n’ai jamais pensé en faire mon métier car je n’ai pas plus de talent qu’un autre. Je pense sincèrement que tout le monde pourrait faire de la photo avec un peu de connaissances techniques, après c’est le feeling de la personne, l’intuition, l’oeil du photographe qui fait la différence. Il y a énormément d’amateurs qui prennent de très belles photos sur flickr et myspace par exemple. La concurrence est rude. La photographie est bien plus abordable que le cinéma, qui lui est nettement plus complexe. Bien entendu, il n’y a pas lieu de faire des comparaisons mais je crois néanmoins que c’est une des raisons qui explique qu’il y ait un si grand nombre d’amateurs qui font du super travail en photo et moins en cinéma.
Je me mettrais peut être plus tard sérieusement à faire de la photo si des opportunités se présentent mais ce n’est pas d’actualité pour l’instant.“
