The Internet and Graduation

10 May

What do you do now that you have graduated?

This is the question I am asked the most often. My typical answer is nothing. Followed by a chuckle, then an explanation that I have been on the job hunt, applying to positions in Advertising, Branding, and Marketing while trying to embrace my entrepreneurial spirit on the side. In actuality, in the past few months, I have been applying on the side and trying to start projects while really just living life. The internet provides a tremendous opportunity to be able to create movements that can be propagated to a vast audience with very very little overhead. In essence, you can touch people, and all you have to do is click. I feel liberated because as much as I do nothing, I do quite a bit. I peruse the internet, through a laundry list of social media avenues, collecting ideas and inspiration from all the cool shit thats going on here and there. All of which effects the way I think, act, and live. I am truly connected. In my cover letters, I explain that “I don’t just like social media, I grew up in it and I live it daily.” This is pure truth. As I sit in a house in Atl, in the midst of what many would describe as a crazy trip, I am still able to do all the things that I do when I am home, the things that I feel are key to my daily feeling of accomplishment. Sometime thats just seeing something amazing on the internet, like the NYC Dining Car or blogging about it, or checking on my friends on fb. Being away from home has allowed me to feel how connected I am really am in SF. all the friends that hit me up on weekends to know where they should party or monday afternoon txts about where we are going to play some ball. I appreciate the power of knowledge and then sharing what you know.

Who are you?

I guess asking what I do with myself is asking in part who I am. I could answer that question with blogger. Maybe. Social activist. Maybe. Good party aficionado. :) . I am one to look at the world critically and set out to change it for the best, just a little bit. That could be giving Hamburgers to the Homeless or trying to convince someone to go out without being scared of the consequences. I have looked around at the things that I do, the things that other ppl do and tried to find what makes me happy and what doesnt. Then I fight, tooth and nail to do much much more of the first and much less of the second. I love a good drink, the company of other ppl, an intriguing woman, sport, fashion, a good laugh and a satisfying meal no matter what time it is, just to name a few. If I can inspire one person, then I can die happy. I am tha Giant, looking at the world from the Clouds, with a bird’s eye view, a comb and a magnifying glass.

Now step right up to the edge of the cliff, and ….

TAKE THE LEAP with me.

Off at BLOWfish Sushi

28 Mar

I finally did it. I been thinkin abt hittin blowfish sushi for a min. It’s really a block from my house. I have no idea any y I never been out there. Anywho. I went n ya. Get it in

To start, the ambiance it real crackin. It’s got a hipster euro feel, which is a lil funny since it has manga all over. The music brought me right Bach to my Paris shit.

The drinks, always a pt of judgment. They were unique n delicious. N Japanese oriented. Plus who can argue with half off local thurs.

They had some little screens, well big screens, with some anime jumpin off. To start, me n anime have always had a wierd relationship. I always have discouraged (/hated on… Don’t tell) ppl that watch anime, most often my BruhBruh. But, at the same time, I def have a soft spot for the artistry and the creativity. Wierd. I guess it’s societal tropes vs the self. Or something. Either way. I’m sitting. Sippin some ill ass cucumber h2ö. Watching this shit. On one screen was Afro samurai. Crackin. Off top. On the other was some shit I just couldn’t figure out, though I have to say it did not help that there was no sound. This chick was just gratuitously neck-ed (I was just informed by a cute Texan the difference between naked, like in the bath n neck-ed like….. Uh, you know) the whole time. Wierd and captivating at the same time.

So I likethe ppl. The ambiance. The décor. The drunks. But the best was the food. Wasabi tobiko. I mean come on. It’s a wrappper.

In all if u hit the sco. GOOOOO

9erCtr

After a great super bowl, it’s only appropriate to bring back Giants of the 80′s, the San Francisco 49ers. We were surpassed yesterday as the Steelers won their 6th ‘ship as a franchise. Hats off to Tomlin for pulling it off, cept I wanted to see if Larry could snatch a jump ball at the end.

From football to the city, this winter I crossed enemy lines. Roxie’s is my sub spot. It’s what I do. But ppl have been up in arms abt Sub Center in West Portal.

I went down there to check it out and I have to say. I was impressed. I mean sandwiches were good. But not as good as ambiance and the décor (ha lynch, beastmode). It was 9ered out to the max. I love it. Can’t wait to put candlestick n kezar on my sleeve.

Let’s get it. You gotta love ppl that know ricky wters. Not gore not hearst. Waters. N Merton. Funky chicken all day

Back to the mASS

27 Jan

He’s BAAAACK.

After a long hiatus, im finally back at Amherst College. I show them so much love while Im gone, but not I have to get physical. We have been in this relationship for several years, so if we dont get physical now, I might lose her… lmao…

With that, I will be on a consistent schedule, maybe even posting daily again. This is the experiment. Not being in as bustling of a place as a Paris, A frisco, A NYC. How will he keep the blog going. I have notice that so many ppls blog go down, but that really wasnt the pt of this thing, its a means of my personal expression, and that never ends…

Anywho, We took my sister out for her bday the other day, crazy how fast these kids grow up. She looks like a lil hooper already. but thats the end of the holidays, a jan bday. have a look at my beautiful city. I LOVE IT

SlantedDoors

19 Jan

Yeas, in the hometown. I was back in Frisco and it was marvelous. This post is cool cause I watched this restaurant grow.

Back in the day, prolly 10 years ago almost by now. Shit. That’s a long time. But yea, back then the Slanted Door was a nice Vietnamese spot on Valencia. Cut from the modern mold, as many restaurants do now. I used to order take out like once a week or so. Imperial rolls n these snap peas with chicken n shitake mushrooms. Popular.

Now, they moved to the ferry building. And have a month long waiting list. Wowzers.

Either way, the food is still great n then drinks. I couldn’t drink back then but it doesn’t get better the. A whiskey cocktail with a hand cut ice cube. Let’s get it.

They even have nice lights. Lmao

Ruby BooBoo

16 Nov

This is my first. My first negative review of a restaurant. I don’t want to but the set up was so good you could easily get fooled by the food. Ultimately, that’s what an eatery is about. The eats. As much as I appreciate square plates and mood lighting, they are add ons. The food has to be good.

I guess I should start with how I ended up here at Ruby Foos. I was walking around and me n Kate were thinking about what we wanted to do for dinner. Somehow, PF Changs came up and we were wondering if they had one in NYC. As it turns out, they don’t. But, a forum on chowdown.com said that Ruby Foos was actually better. Fack naw. Every dish I had was a little off (and I had 4 different things). It was not a good representation for the BR Guest restaurants. I almost hit wildwood BBQ but nope. Not after this. Today is about dominating Niche markets, not putting out crap for everybody. I think if this place wasn’t at time square no one would come. Either that or no one has had good azn b4. Tisk tisk tisk

SoCal Sun: ¡FIGHTon!

12 Nov

I had to do it. Had to get back to the sunny cali sun for halloween. I just think that halloween cannot be done justice if not in hot weather. There are too many wardrobe issues, its too cold, how will i cover up and stay warm on the way there, etc etc. even dudes. You can’t really rock a good baby diaper in 40 degree weather. Plus, so cal ladies are….. tisk tisk tisk. Ill just say its a great place. In situations like these, the mot juste tends to elude even the most laudable and eloquent writer (excuse my hubris, I AM a LEO after all. “let my dreads bang to let em know that Im a lion” a lil foresight). Anyways, so, I was down in LA. Ill get to the debauchery that was halloween in the next few days but Ill start with a old fashion ass whopping. A beat down. Im talking football of course. 56-0, thats ridiculous. In conference at that. Man. I got to the game a little late after a ridiculous tailgate. Hold on. I know what ur thinking. How is this man gonna skip the tailgate? I have been to quite a few tailgates. I love them. Drinking, BBQ and Football. What more do you want? nm I kno what u want. But shit. Its almost the perfect trifecta. The best you get without pulling a George Costanza. ya. so this was one of three homecomings I attended this year and this might have been the best tailgate. Its a pretty ridiculous scene. you walk into a fenced off section of the USC quad and run into an uncomprehendable combination of beer pong, funnels, open bar, grilling and top shelf mixed drinks. At 10am mind you. This is the more Caucasian side. then not so far off in distance, on the other side, TI blaring. Its a Block party, with trains of black and latino brothers and sisters running through crowds “clapping they hands, stomping they feet”. and to top all this off, it started raining. OMG. Crazy scene. So, once i made it out to the game, after i scalped some tickets for 2$ each. I finally made it to the game. In the time i took to buy some fries on the way to my seat the score jumped from 21-0 to 35. I was pissed. the trojans couldnt hold off on the two tds till i got there. tisk tisk tisk. The game was great. the day was great. and the night was still to come. Makes me wish i went to a school with a major football (and hoop) squad. And to top it off, i got to peep the so cal sunset, “caused by the smog” (shoot out to Get Shorty).

Fighting Genetrification

7 Nov

This post is exciting for much more than the food. It’s got history. I had a few friends in town from the Sucka Free, one of them a Puerto Rican. It was their last night and she lamented over the fact that she had still not tapped into some true PR food. The answer: Taza de Oro. I had been going to this spot since I was knee hi to a grasshopper. Matter of fact, my parents had been going since b4 me, the pre-Gigantic Era.

The neighborhood has changed. You wouldn’t even expect an authentic PR spot anymore. It’s manhattan. Gentrified and expensive. But walking into Taza is akin to entering a historical microcosm. As the Arros con Pollo and the Frijoles take over your olfactory system, you look around and realize you have stumbled upon something truly special. The signs are OG, the typewriter cash register. Everything the same as b4.

The food is amazing. I had a frijoles Negroes con arroz amarrillo with a chicken cultlet. Had to do the maduras on the side. Amazing. And cheap. That plus another rice n beans and a soupa with some mofongo was under 25$ all together. Good for three I would say.

If your by 14th and 8th make it happen. I give hella, ya, HELLA, thumbs up. Bon Apetit.

THE falafel

5 Nov

This is an image of the single greatest falafel I have ever had. Its on Rue de Rosiers, in Paris, L’As du Falafel. First, let me give you some context with which to judge my falafel expertise. For one, I was a vegetarian until the age of 12. During this time, and the years following, all the way through till high school, I ate falafel for dinner at least once a week, if not more. Long story short, I have had all sorts of falafels in my life. AND this is hands DOWN the best.

The photo does not exactly do it justice, as delicious as it looks. Let me break down the line up. First, they line the uber fresh pita with hummus. Then shredded red and white cabbage, then diced tomatoes and cucumbers, then a layer of 4 extra small extra crispy falafel balls. But wait, DERS moa (Scary Movie Voice) then more tomtoms and cucumbers more balls and then, the topper, deep fried eggplant. top that off with some tahini sauce and the hot harissa. Thats the Lenny Kravitz special… you cant beat it.
